Crystal on the Catwalk – Swarovski
Thanks to the Crystal on the Catwalk and the Conscious Design initiatives, Swarovski was present during the FW20 fashion week in Paris. Brands and designers as Koché, Germanier, Marine Serre and Nicolas Lecourt, used hundreds of thousands of new and upcycled crystals in order to embellish their creations.
As the concept of upcycling penetrates into the fashion world, brands as Swarovski become leading conveyors of the concept. The Conscious Design program is aimed to inspire the design community and challenge them to consider the circular economy by using Swarovski upcycled crystals. For the brand conscious design means “adopting principles of circularity and reappraising waste as a resource.”
A Swarovski upcycled crystal is defined as an unused, unsold, imperfect, lightly used, and/or retired (out of program) crystal. Since the inception of the upcycling program in 2015, the brand has donated over 6 million crystals. Taking the Paris Fashion Week as a spotlight, this initiative might drive a positive change towards more responsible practices.
