Guoyan V9 – Supreme edition
by Abdon FLORES
If there is a grain which defines the agricultural identity of China that would be sorghum; there is even a novel –and a movie– devoted to this foundation culture: Red sorghum (1987). The images of sorghum plants shaken by the wind at night are a strong symbol of this species which traditionally has been used to produce spirits. This savoir faire has rendered top distillates like King’s Luck Guoyuan V9 Supreme Edition, a luxury spirit made of sorghum, wheat and water.
Early December, the Guoyuan V9 was presented in France by the deputy general manager of Jiangsu King’s Luck Brewery, M. Yuewu Hu in the sumptuous Peninsula Hotel. The event was rather well conceived since after a substantial press conference, a dinner took place at the Lili, the Chinese gastronomical restaurant of the Peninsula. This was also the opportunity to taste Calvados by Christian Drouin and Armagnacs by Maison Jean Cavé.

Now, the Guoyuan V9 is an eau-de-vie (52 % Alch) with contrasting notes: soya sauce, flowers, grilled almonds and hazelnuts. It is a non-aggressive, fresh spirit with a remarkable persistence in the mouth. The bottle recalls that of a perfume, with a cap on transparent glass crowning a translucent continent. The spirit is the blend of ancient knowledge and state of the art technology, since it was engineered by a team of microbiologists and brewers. This guarantees a standardization of the product, so its quality can be systematically reproduced over the time.
King’s Luck Guoyuan V9 Supreme Edition is already available at Le Lys d’Or, another Chinese gastronomical restaurant in Paris. Price: 199 € TTC.
