Yuima Nakazato FW 19/20 Couture

by Abdon FLORES

When fashion seeks into science a source of inspiration, the output is always fascinating. Japanese designer Yuima Nakazato has been in the fashion-science orbit long enough to freely express himself using not only these two disciplines but also art in order to convey his couture ideas. Fashion, science, and art, a trio of disparate elements that render a belief in the potential of realizing a future full of hope.

In “Birth”, his Fall Winter 19/20 collection, science is represented by the fabric Spiber and art by THE EUGENE Studio. Mr. Nakazato has a future vision for humanity in which “Eventually, each and every garment will be unique and different”; a radical idea meaning the democratization of haute couture. The Spiber’s Brewed Protein™ is a novel, sustainable material made through a unique fermentation process. The fabrics utilized in this collection are the result of combining this cutting edge technology with traditional hand-knitting methods.

Goldrain,” the sculpture located at the center of the Ecole de Médecine, has been under development by THE EUGENE Studio since 2018 and is based on the concept of “the generation of the Earth.” Tiny particles of gold -each no bigger than 0.1mm in diameter- delicately fall from the sky to the ground. This rain evokes the prestigious platinum color of the new protein material featured in Mr. Nakazato collection, together with the fluctuations and helical structure of DNA. It also symbolizes the process for creating this new material, which is born through the mixture of powder and liquid.

The result of these interesting approaches is a solid, well thought and pure collection. Science and art are wisely diluted and incorporated into each one of the looks that never lack refinement or sensuality. With “Birth” Yuima Nakazato signs a well achieved work and concept, one that eventually might also serve as a source of inspiration.
