Yumi Katsura SS18 – Couture
by Abdon FLORES
The end of January in Paris is an important date for all fashion lovers since haute couture week takes place in the capital. For venerable brands like Yumi Katsura, this is the perfect time to show to the world what a designer like Ms. Katsura and her fellow co-designer, Toshikazu Iwaya, are able to create.
The Spring-Summer 2018 Yumi Katsura collection was inspired by famous Japanese and European painters such as Hokusai, Monet, Van Gogh and Henri Rivière. The collection was named “Bonds” in order to illustrate the links between Eastern and Western cultures. Seduced by the magic of the master painters both designers catch the miracle of nature. The collection is full of prints and life; fabrics are smooth, graceful and sophisticated, highlighting a dazzling range of colors.
Deeply concerned by the Japanese savoir faire Yumi Katsura preserves and enhances ancestral methods of creation, like the silk dyeing technique called Yuzen or the traditional Japanese art known as Ukiyo-e, masterfully practised by Hokusai in the 19th century. From the luxury kimono to the cocktail dress, this couture collection has indeed an ample degree of wearability and appeal.
